WALTERBORO:     Mrs. Adeline Carson Craven, wife of the late J.J. Craven, passed away peacefully at her family home early Tuesday morning, January 7, 2025 under hospice care, with her family by her side.  She was 97.

Mrs. Craven was born in Colleton County June 7, 1927 a daughter of the late Joseph Ellie Carson Sr. and Mary Jomimah Utsey Carson.  During her early working years, she was a seamstress at the Walterboro Dress Plant, but later in life was the storekeeper at the family business…Craven's Grocery…for almost twenty-five years.  Mrs. Craven was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where she formerly taught Sunday School, and had recently been attending Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.  She loved spending time outdoors working in her yard and cutting her own grass.  She was known as the family historian, and had compiled an extensive genealogy record of the Craven family.

Mrs. Craven is survived by her children Patricia Walker (Donald), Charles Edward Craven (Jeanette), and Laura Lynn Hughes.  There are seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.  She also leaves behind her sister Dell McCraw.  In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters Betty Ginn, and Annie Lou, Virginia, and Mary Ruth Craven, by her brothers Aaron, Joseph and James Carson, by her half-sister Lucille Corbett, and by her half-brother Buddy Carson.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon, January 12, 2025 at 2:00 in the chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, with burial following in the Bedon Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at noon on the day of the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, P.O.B. 6704, Hagerstown, Maryland  21741 (cancer.org/donate).  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
