WALTERBORO: Andrew Michael Ulmer passed away peacefully at his home in Walterboro, with his family by his side, on September 13, 2023. He was 77.
Andy was born in Walterboro on October 7, 1945, son of the late George Frank Ulmer and Roselyn Redmond Ulmer. He graduated from Walterboro High School in 1963 and then attended Clemson University, where he received his B.S. Degree in Industrial Education in 1967. While a student at Clemson, Andy was actively involved with the Phi Kappa Delta fraternity and was a member of the ROTC program. Upon graduation, he was commissioned into the United States Army as a field artillery officer. Andy proudly served his country during his postings at Fort Riley, Kansas and Fort Bliss, Texas. It was at Fort Bliss in El Paso that Andy met the love of his life, Katherine Hammond. Andy and Kathy were married and spent fifty wonderful years together as husband and wife.
After his military service, Andy pursued a career in real estate development and brokerage that took him to various parts of the country. He forged many relationships throughout his business travels, blessing him with dear friends and associates with whom he maintained contact throughout his life. Andy's love of his hometown pulled him back to Walterboro, where he found joy in connecting with family and friends.
Andy possessed a deep love for the Lowcountry, often navigating the roads and rivers he knew so well. Andy was a wealth of knowledge about the area, and his gift as a storyteller will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Andy is survived by his wife, Kathy; his son, Frank Burton Ulmer (Suzanne); and his daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Ulmer. He is also survived by two granddaughters he loved dearly, Ella and Lily, as well as a host of extended family and friends.
