WALTERBORO: Barbara Chewning Miller, widow of Eugene L. Miller Jr., died November 26, in Walterboro surrounded by her loving family. She was born in the old Es'Dorn Hospital in Walterboro on August 8, 1928, the daughter of Eleanor Hoyt Chewning and Charlie Clinton Chewning Sr. She was a 1945 graduate of Walterboro high School abd attended the University of South Carolina. She retired from General Telephone Company, where she was the heart and soul of the Walterboro office for more than forty years.

Barbara was a devoted fan of her Gamecocks, and never willingly missed a Carolina ballgame. She was even more devoted to her family, and was both a sister and a "second mother' to her brother, Charlie and her sister-in-law, Ann. Her niece, Pam and her nephew, Clint were as close to her as her own daughter, Kim. Like everyone else in her family, she was a great lover of animals, and proudly introduced everyone to her adored labradoodle Tyke as "my grand-dog". To her family, she was known as "Ba-Ba", but in her later years she was lovingly referred to as "Lady Violet", because there was no doubt who was the matriarch and ruler of her family.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Kim Chewning Miller, her brother Charlie Clinton Chewning, Jr. and his wife Ann, who was much more of a sister that a sister-in-law, all of Walterboro, her "second children", Pamela Chewning Hood of Charlotte, and Charlie Clinton Chewning III of Beaufort, several nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews, all of whom held special places in her heart, and two very special people, Agnes Allen and Missy Wade, whom she loved as part of her family.


The family is so grateful to the compassionate and caring staffs of both Pruitt Health in Walterboro and Colleton Regional Hospital. Their kindness and graciousness is so very much appreciated.


Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 4:00 in the Chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home of Walterboro, with burial following in Greenlawn memorials Gardens. The family will receive friends that afternoon beginning at 3:00 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her memory be made to FOCCAS (Friends of the Colleton County Animal Shelter)33 Poor Farm Road, Walterboro, SC 29488, or to the animal rescue organization of ones choice. Parker-Rhoden Funeral home of Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
