WALTERBORO:     Betty Jean George Hurlbutt, 96, died in Summerville on December 6th. Born in Charleston May 28,1928, she grew up in Aiken, attended Coker College and after marrying Boris Hurlbutt August 19, 1950 and moving to Camden, then Walterboro they began his consulting forestry business. She was very organized and was his office manager for many years. They decided to stay in Walterboro because he had moved around the southeast as a child and wanted his children to grow up in the small town. Betty was a real Southern lady, a wonderful mother to her sons and wife and business partner to her husband. She was also a loving "Mother" to their beloved dogs over the years. She never shied away from a challenge and was always willing to roll up her sleeves and volunteer for causes to benefit her community. She was active in politics, school organization, her church and raising her two sons. She was an able seamstress, knowledgeable on matters of etiquette, proper writing and was a devoted gardener, often taking her boys to many of the nurseries in the Lowcountry. She loyally accompanied Boris on trips to Athens GA for football games in support of the Bulldogs. She was also a capable small craft mate on the family's inshore and offshore fishing expeditions. In short, Betty loved her family and was a fine role model.

She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Boris, her parents Leonard and Irene George, her sisters Helen Shaw (Bill) and Geneva Kahrs, step grandchildren Jonathan Smith and Caroline Smith Adams, Sisters and Brothers in Law Nucia and Earl Reimers and Marjorie and Joseph Cheshire IV. She is survived by her sons Mark and Philip Hurlbutt, grandson Alexei Hurlbutt, ex daughter in law Rachel Hurlbutt, Brother and Sister in Law, Guy and Linda Hurlbutt, nieces Betty Wieters (Walter), Melinda Sanders (Charles), Martha Bryant (Steve) and Sara Hurlbutt Walsh (Joseph Cook), nephews Joseph Cheshire V (Carolyn) and Lee Hurlbutt.

Also, special mention to the kind and caring staff at The Village at Summerville, especially, Amber, Jaime and Angela, all angels.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 Saturday morning, January 11, 2025 at St. Judes Anglican Church in Walterboro.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Skardon Hall.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice or to the Colleton County Library.  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
