Obituary

Mrs. Betty Saunders Hydrick, a lifelong resident of Colleton County, passed away on December 19, 2022 after a long illness. She was 89 years old.

Mrs. Hydrick was born in Stokes, South Carolina on November 6, 1933 to Homer Vardell Saunders and Lessie Parker Saunders. She graduated from Lander College in 1955, where she majored in elementary education and physical education. Following her graduation from Lander, she taught in public and private schools in Colleton County for over three decades, teaching a countless number of students. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

In addition to her work as a teacher, Mrs. Hydrick was a faithful volunteer and congregant at Doctor's Creek Baptist Church in Walterboro, South Carolina. Multiple generations of her family attended Doctor's Creek, including her mother, who served the church in various roles for over five decades. Mrs. Hydrick's faith was the defining feature of her life, and throughout her life, she humbly sought to bear witness to the life and truth of Jesus Christ.

Aside from her faith and family, Mrs. Hydrick's other passion was Clemson University and its football team. Mrs. Hydrick rarely missed a home football game and was known to loudly cheer for her Tigers.

Mrs. Hydrick is survived by her children, Timothy Charles Hydrick (Marcia) of Seneca, South Carolina and John Saunders Hydrick (Kathy) of Columbia, South Carolina. She has three grandchildren, Tucker Thrift Hydrick (Ashlyn), Lauren Hydrick Koch (Clay), and Thomas Tyler Hydrick (Logan). She has one great grandchild, Brooks Timothy Hydrick. She is also survived by her loving friends, Mildred Yates, Lean Stephens, and Miesha Yates, whom she loved as family. In addition to her immediate family, she is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband of almost forty years, Thomas Harold Hydrick, Jr. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Tucker, who died early in their marriage. Finally, she was preceded in death by a brother, William H. Saunders, Sr., and two sisters, Vivian Saunders and Jeanette Vaughn.

A funeral service will be held at Doctor's Creek Baptist Church on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the funeral service from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Doctor's Creek Baptist Church, 126 Doctor's Creek Road, P.O. Box 2, Walterboro, SC 29488.  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
