In between these interim pastorates, Bro. Bob did pulpit supply work at several churches. In 2006 he re-entered the full-time ministry to pastor Doctor's Creek Baptist Church for four years until health problems forced him to retire a second time in 2010 at age 70.
He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Ann Smith Johnson (Patti). She was his childhood sweetheart, best friend, companion, caregiver, and fellow worker. He is also survived by four children: Chaplain Lt. Col. (ret.) Robert W. Johnson, Sr., USAF, Richard Mark Johnson, Dana Frances Holmes, and Dr. Angel Johnson Tucker. When his son, then Chaplain Captain Robert W. Johnson, Sr., was stationed at Arlington National Cemetery, Bro. Bob was privileged to assist him in conducting two full-honor burial services. When Chaplain Johnson was stationed at Osan Air Force Base in Osan, South Korea, Bro. Bob spent ten days in South Korea preaching at Air Force chapel services and later at a United Methodist Church in downtown Seoul.
During his 51 years of active ministry, Bro. Bob served his various Baptist associations as moderator, vice-moderator, VBS director, Sunday school director, church training director, and evangelism director. He also led numerous revivals.
