Joseph Robert Mackay (called Bob or Mackay by his friends and family) died peacefully in his sleep on November 14, 2022 with his daughters by his side. He was predeceased by his wife Ann (Carter) after a marriage of 63 years.
Mr. Mackay was born on July 19, 1925 and led a full and happy life. He was a Clemson graduate who was training as a pilot in the Army Air Corps at the end of World War II. He became a mechanical engineer and worked for Great Lakes Carbon Corp. for the majority of his career. The corporation transferred him many times, including to India where he oversaw the construction of two graphite factories. During the time he was working in India, he and his wife were able to travel and experience life in many of the countries of the world.
He was the son of George C. and Elizabeth (Muckenfus) Mackay. He is survived by his three daughters Ann (Candy) Zgolinski (Albert); Bobbie Mackay; and Salley Barr (Deland); grandchildren Salley, Alexander, Robert, T.J., Mackay and great grandchildren Landon, Elise, Caroline, Joshua, Hannah and Gatling. He was preceded in death by his brother George, son-in-law John Downs and grandson Eric.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no ceremony at this time, however a celebration of his life will be held at a date to be announced. Any contributions in his name can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
