WALTERBORO: Malcolm "Bugs" Smith, the son of the late Dr. Warren Smith and Pollie Jones Smith, passed away on January 3rd at the age of 70. Bugs was born on April 22, 1953, as a brother to Warren "Skeet" Smith, Madison "Nat" Smith, Polly "Cricket" Smith, Julia S. Ranson, and Becky Smith. Later on in his life, he would become a loving husband to Lark Lucas Smith and father to Andrea L. Smith and Gabriel Lucas Maxey Smith. Known for his character and disposition, he would make a lasting impression on his family for years to come, touching on all of those that he would interact with.
Mr. Smith built a lasting career in the United States Air Force that would entail what he became later in his life. He was known in the Air Force as "APE," which is an acronym for "Ariel Photography Expert." In his field, he would ensure to collect data on various tests that the military would assign him. As a result of his service, he was able to help the military achieve a remarkable step forward in the technology of weapons systems. All his accomplishments stem from Bugs's love for science fiction, such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Dune, and many other novels. As a result of this hobby, he was known for exalting remarks toward these franchises, leaving a notable impression on his children, grandchildren, and those around him.
Bugs is survived by his wife Lark, by his son Gabriel, and by his daughter Andrea. He leaves behind two grandchildren, Aiden and Asher Robertson, his brother Warren, and his sisters Julia and Becky. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Madison and Pauline. There is a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends that he loved dearly.
A memorial service will be held Saturday afternoon, March 9, 2024 at 1:00 in the chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro.
