Obituary

WALTERBORO :     Mr. Charles L. Blocker, husband of the late Pearl Benton Blocker, passed away Tuesday evening August 14, 2018 at the Veteran's Victory House in Walterboro.  He was 90.

Mr. Blocker was born in Colleton County September 12, 1927 a son of the late Jefferson Farry Blocker and Gladys Hudson Blocker.  He was a proud veteran of both the United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard.  Mr. Blocker served as a Seaman in the Navy during WWII, and received the WWII Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal, and the China Service Medal.   After his service in the Navy, Mr. Blocker joined the Coast Guard and served for over 15 years, retiring as a Petty Officer First Class.  He was stationed aboard the USCGC "Half Moon" for many years, and during his service was awarded the 3 Coast Guard Good Conduct Medals and 3 Coast Guard Bronze Stars.

After his retirement, he was employed with Cummings Oil Company as a truck driver and deliveryman for over 16 years.  Mr. Blocker was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans.  He was extremely active in Colleton County in veteran's affairs, and was instrumental in the formation of the Colleton County Honor Guard.  He was an active member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.  At the time of her death in 2014, he and his late wife Pearl had been married for 63 years.

Mr. Blocker is survived by his daughter, Belinda Farmer of Walterboro, and by his daughter-in-law, Robin M. Blocker of Lexington.  He was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Dean Blocker and David Vinnie Blocker.

Graveside funeral services, with military honors, will be held Saturday morning, August 18, 2018 at 10:00 at the Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church social hall.  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
