YEMASSEE: Mrs. Edith Gregorie Lane, wife of the late Melvin Oliver Lane Jr., passed away peacefully at her home in Yemassee Wednesday afternoon, March 12, 2025, under hospice care, with her family by her side. She was 89.
Mrs. Lane was born in Bennettsville, SC, May 5, 1935 a daughter of the late Henry Baker Gregorie Sr. and Edith Anderson Gregorie. As a young girl she attended and graduated from Saint Mary's School in Raleigh, NC before attending Converse College, and then graduating from the University of South Carolina. For many years she was a school teacher in both Charleston and Beaufort Counties. She was also the owner and operator of Yemassee Enterprises.
Mrs. Lane loved spending time at the beach with her family and friends. She enjoyed shagging, fishing and shrimping, and was an excellent seamstress. She was also a Senior Warden at Sheldon Chapel.
Mrs. Lane is survived by her children Melvin O. Lane III (Gail), Edith Lane Robertson (Wes), and A. Gregorie Lane. There are six grandchildren she adored: Mary K. Grayson, Laice L. Smith (Justin), Melvin O. Lane IV (Brittany), Phillip A. Lane, Olivia D. Robertson, and Daniel W. Robertson Jr. There are also nine great-grandchildren she loved dearly, as well as two special nieces, Kay Morningstar and Beverly Cain. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son Harry B. Lane, and by her brother Dr. Harry B. Gregorie.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and love to Mrs. Lane's devoted caregivers Anna, Kathy, Cindy, and Catherine, and to Crescent Hospice, for the excellent care they gave to her throughout her final days.
The family will receive friends during a time of visitation Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home. Burial services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ebenezer Cemetery, P.O.B. 428, Yemassee, SC 29945. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
