COTTAGEVILLE: Mr. Eugene "Gene" K. Smoak, husband of Sarah Muckenfuss Smoak, died Saturday evening at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. He was 80.
Mr. Smoak was born in Smoaks October 5, 1935, a son of the late Andrew Laurie Smoak Sr. and Mamie Carter Smoak. He graduated from Smoaks High School, and attended the University of South Carolina. He worked for the State Ports Authority and the State Auditor's Office as a cost accountant. He was the Comptroller for The Citadel from 1966-1976, and then finished out his career as Comptroller and Deputy Director of the South Carolina Department of Wildlife and Marine Resources. Mr. Smoak was a member of the Rehoboth United Methodist Church, where he was a lay speaker, and part of the United Methodist Men's Club.
In addition to his wife of sixty years, he is survived by his sons: Keith Smoak (Tiffany) of Ravenel, Larry Smoak (Angie) of Johns Island, and Roger Smoak of Atlanta. There are three grandchildren: Ashlyn, Jake, and Larry Smoak Jr.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 in the Chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, with burial following in the Jordan Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 Tuesday at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Rehoboth United Methodist Church.
