WALTERBORO:     Frances Louise Adams Barton passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, February 12, 2026 under hospice care at Magnolias of Walterboro, with her family by her side.  She was 90.

Frances was born in Aiken, SC, March 15, 1935, a daughter of the late Thomas and Lucille Wilson Adams.  She was hired in 1964 as the first clerk of the Colleton County Council, and later served as deputy clerk to the Colleton County Supervisor.  Frances eventually became the administrative assistant to the Colleton County Administrator where she worked under the direction of many supervisors and administrators including:  Harry Fripp, Myrtis Fripp, Thomas Fennell, David Carter, Hank Veleker, Charles Griffith, and Art Williams.  She retired in 1997 after 35 years of devoted service to her community.  She was occasionally asked to return temporarily to fill various positions, and she always did so eagerly.  She loved everyone she worked with over the years, and considered them like her family.

During the 1980's Frances worked nights and weekends as a bartender at Charlie Charlie's, which was owned by her good friends Charlie and Barbara Hogan.  She was active with Senior Friends at the Colleton Medical Center, was on the Rice Festival Board, and worked for many years with the City of Walterboro organizing the Christmas Parade.

Frances served God faithfully, knowing and loving her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Walterboro, before becoming a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.  She was a volunteer at the Good Shepherd's Food Pantry, Vacation Bible School, and was always there to cook a meal for anyone in need.

Frances loved being surrounded by people.  She loved telling a good joke and making people laugh.  Affectionately known to many as "Frannie", and as "Mema" by her grandchildren, she will be forever loved and missed by her family and friends.  She will remain in their hearts forever.

Frances is survived by her children Sheree Avant (Bubba), Terry Barton (Lilly), and Randy Barton (Michelle).  She leaves behind her grandchildren:  Melissa (Jamie), Ryan (Theresa), Danielle (Joey), Gunter (Elizabeth), Mackensie and Rocco.  She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Morgan, Lucas, Caroline, Emerson, Josie, London, Trent (Halee), and Grace (Greg), and by her great-great grandchildren Levi, Wylee, Annee Roe, and "G.T.".  She loved her sisters Mary Alice (Rowan), Shirley, and Rachel (Mike), as well as all of her nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her lifelong best friend Bebe Kemp, whom she missed very much, and her siblings Kathleen, Marian, Betty and Tommy.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, February 21, 2026 at 11:00 in the chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home.  Committal services at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens will be held privately.  The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 the morning of the service at the funeral home, located at 117 Paul Street in Walterboro.
