WALTERBORO: Mr. George Leonard Carter, a retired employee of both the State Department of Engineers and J. P. Stevens Inc., passed away Tuesday at his home after an extended illness. He was 76.



Mr. Carter was born January 31, 1939 in Colleton County, a son of the late Lucas C. Carter and Emily Garvin Carter. He was a member of Ebenzer United Methodist Church and served in the SC Army National Guard. He owned and operated several Opal Service Stations in the Walterboro area, and also worked for Judy's and Palmetto Mobile Home Sales for years.



Surviving are: brothers, Lucas McCollin Carter (Pressie L.) and Lee Carter (Ann H.) both of Walterboro; sisters, Marie C. Hoats and Elizabeth C. Pellum (Harry C.) both of Walterboro and Joyce C. Dopson (Hardin) of Mt. Pleasant. Eight nieces and nephews and a number of great nieces and nephews also survive.

The family wishes to express their love and appreciation to Hospice of Charleston and their nurses Melanie Hoats Layden and Shellie Smith, and to the caregivers Destiny Smith and Lucille Green, who all took such wonderful care of Mr. Carter during his lengthy illness.



Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday at the graveside in Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
