WALTERBORO:     Edward Glen Carter passed away peacefully late Friday evening, March 13, 2026 at his home in Walterboro under hospice care, with his devoted wife Mitzi by his side, at the age of 78.

Glen was born in Walterboro June 21, 1947 a son of the late Haskell and Goldie Hartley Carter.  After graduating from high school, he attended North Greenville College for two years, before transferring to The Baptist College in Charleston to complete his degree in English.  He was a well-known and beloved teacher at Walterboro High School for many years before focusing on special services with the younger children at the middle and elementary schools in the area.  He retired after thirty years of dedicated service.

Glen was an accomplished pianist.  He started taking lessons under Annnie Ruth Fishburne at the age of nine, and continued receiving instruction from teachers throughout his high school and college years.  His ability to comprehend and play music was extraordinary.  He served as the church pianist and organist at Doctor's Creek Baptist Church for 20 years, and Cottageville United Methodist Church for over 11 years.  He also served many other smaller churches when a temporary musician was needed.  Glen was particularly fond of not only playing…but planning and selecting the music for services…sometimes months in advance of the time it would be needed.  He also taught piano privately to children throughout the area.

Glen and his wife attended Doctor's Creek Baptist Church for many years, and later joined the First Baptist Church of Walterboro.  In the most recent years he was the music director and pianist at Bethel Presbyterian Church.  He was an avid reader and had an extensive collection of cookbooks, religious books, and hymnals in his home  library.  Glen was a man of few words, but when he did speak or offer his opinion, it was given with tremendous thought, and was always well-received by others.  He asked good questions and was a connector of people.  He was a conversationalist, but the conversations were never about him.  He was always interested in the lives of other people, and enjoyed listening to their stories.  He will truly be missed.

Glen is survived by his beloved wife of forty years, Mitzi Mabe Carter, and by her siblings Phillip Mabe (Charlene) and Gina Mabe-Smith (Eddie). There is a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, March 17, 2026 at 11:00 at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Walterboro, with burial following at Tabor United Methodist Church.  The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 in the fellowship hall of the church, Douglas Hall, 403 Church Street, Walterboro, SC  29488.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either Doctor's Creek Baptist Church, The First Baptist Church of Walterboro, or Bethel Presbyterian Church.  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home of Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
