EDISTO BEACH: Mr. Harold Dean Green, widower of Nancie Johnson Green, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 25, 2017. He was 83.


Mr. Green was born in Moncks Corner, SC on May 10, 1934, son of the late Luther Leland Green and Leone Phillips Green. He graduated from Berkley High School, Newberry College, and obtained his Master's Degree in Math Education from the University of Georgia. He spent most of his adult life in Bamberg working at Carlisle Military School and, then, Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, where he retired as Dean of Related Subjects.


In addition to coaching and teaching, Mr. Green was active in the community through Trinity United Methodist Church where he was Superintendent of Sunday School, on the School Board for Bamberg School District One, and the Foundation Board of the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics.

Mr. Green and his wife retired to Edisto Beach in 1990…a community they had both grown to love over the years through countless visits and vacations. He became extremely involved in that community as well. He was an active member of the Edisto Island United Methodist Church, where he was Head Usher and volunteered faithfully at Nancie's Clothes Closet for many years. He was past president and Tail Twister of the Edisto Island Lion's Club. He also volunteered at Botany Bay, Jane Edwards Elementary School, and Animal Lovers of Edisto.

He is survived by his children: Lee Ann Green McElveen (Carl DuBose "Bosie") of Columbia, Vera Margaret Green (Lorraine Bonura) of Edisto Island, and Harold Dean "Hank" Green Jr., Ph.D. of Los Angeles. He has two grandchildren: Mary Talbert McElveen and Margaret DuBose "Maggie" McElveen. He is also survived by siblings James F. Green (Kay), Virginia Green Adams (Jay), Bertie Green Edens (Roddy), Ruth Nell Kennedy (Jerry) and Kaye Green Myers (Pete). He was predeceased by siblings Leone Green Watkins, Luther Leland Green, Jr., Vera Green Dennis, and Betty Green Brittle (Tom). He is also survived by brother-in-law James Clarence Johnson Jr. (Lillian) of Edisto Beach, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.


Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Edisto Island United Methodist Church, 8193 Palmetto Road, Edisto Island, SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral. A graveside service will be held that afternoon at 2:00 at Bamberg Memorial Gardens, 14836 Heritage Highway, Bamberg, SC. The family will receive friends in Bamberg immediately following the graveside service at the home of Spann and Jamie Brabham, 3122 Railroad Avenue, Bamberg, SC.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the church building fund at P.O.B. 485, Edisto Island, SC 29438. Parker-Rhoden Funeral home of Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
