RUFFIN: Helen Crosby Miles, wife of Charles "Charlie" Miles, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at her residence, surrounded by her family under hospice care.  She was 74.

Helen was born May 5, 1946 in Walterboro, SC a daughter of the late Eugene Stanfield and Essie Craven Stanfield.  At the age of two and a half, after her mother's death, she was adopted and raised by Henry M. Crosby and Ida Corine Bunton Crosby.  She worked for General Telephone Company (GTE) for nineteen years, as well as a Forestry Company and a Brokerage Company, before going to work for Carmichael Oil Company.  She worked there for twenty-eight years before retiring at the age of seventy-two when the company was sold.

Helen was a member of the First Baptist Church of Walterboro, and attended Ruffin Baptist Church until her health declined.  She was a "second mother" to many, possessed an outgoing and caring demeanor, and "never met a stranger".  Helen always had a smile on her face, and without exception would reply "I'm Fine" to anyone that asked about her health.  She believed that if it was not for God, Jesus and the Angels, and the prayers of all of her friends and family, she would not have dealt with her illness as well, and she would not have lived as long as she did.

In addition to her husband, Helen is survived by her daughter and "best friend" Stacie Sineath Vanier (Dwight) of Stonewall, LA.  She has one grandchild, Brianna Vanier, and one great-grandchild Connor. She has two brothers, Tommy Rembert of Walterboro, and Roy "Buster" Crosby of Cottageville.  There six nieces and nephews she helped to raise:  Don, Clark, Randy, Tammy, Dixie, and the late Paula Jenkins.  Helen leaves behind many cousins from both her birth family and her adopted family.  She was preceded in death by her sister Linda Knight, and by two half-sisters, and by four half-brothers.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, October 31, 2020 at 10:00 in the chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, with burial following in the Tabernacle Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home, located at 117 Paul Street in Walterboro.
