Obituary

CANADYS:

Claudius Herman Guess, Jr. went to sleep and woke up in heaven on the morning of October 23, 2018. He was the widower of Ada Elizabeth Cummings Guess and the loving father of Amy Elizabeth Guess of Yonges Island, SC and John F. Cummings of Canadys, SC. He is also survived by his brother's daughter, Beverly Guess Knight and numerous other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Claudius Herman Guess, Sr. and Silina Janie Bishop Guess, one brother, James Floyd Guess, and one sister, Alice Guess Felder.

Herman graduated from Walterboro High School and then enlisted in the US Navy and was a proud World War II veteran, serving as a Seabee. He was a General Foreman Metals Inspector of the Nondestructive Test Division of the Quality Assurance Office at the Charleston Naval Shipyard from 1941 to 1980, when he retired, only to return to work at the shipyard for several more years. He was owner and operator of Guess Blueberry Farm. He served on the Coastal Electric Cooperative Board of Directors from 1986 to 2007. He was a member of Omar Shrine Temple and was a Jester. He also was a member of The Walterboro Elks Lodge. He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church.

He loved spending time at his house that he built at Edisto Beach and so enjoyed entertaining and being the center of attention. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing, camping, square dancing and trips to the mountains. His greatest joy was having Amy, Johnny and "his girls" around him. He was an adopted father to numerous of Amy's friends and treated them just like his own.

The family extends a special thank you to his angel caregivers, Joyce Simmons, Allydine Simmons, Sylvia Linguard, and Joan Breland.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, October 27, 2018 at 4:00 in the Chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00.
