WALTERBORO:     Inez McTeer Steedley, 96, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2021.

The daughter of Harry Daniel McTeer and Katherine Knight McTeer, Inez was born on Daniel Island, SC, on April 8, 1924, and spent her youth on Edisto Island.  After graduating from Edisto High School in 1941, Inez attended Furman University, where she received her B.A. in Sociology in 1945.

Returning to the Lowcountry after college, Inez first worked as an elementary school teacher in Smoaks and Bells, SC, before serving as an attendance supervisor for ten years in Walterboro.  While working in Walterboro, she met Wheeler Morris Steedley, whom she married on February 6, 1954.  The couple spent over sixty-four years together before Wheeler's death in 2018.

A beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Inez was a member of the First Baptist Church of Walterboro, where she was active in the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and the Tuesday Morning Prayer Group. She was a member of the Red Hats Socialites and the Shriner's Auxillary.  Known for her talents as a seamstress and baker, she also enjoyed reading, collecting sea shells, visiting with friends and family, shopping, and sightseeing.  Inez will be remembered for her superb taste, appreciation of southern manners, strength of spirit, and dedication to family.

Inez is survived by her six children: Wheeler "Kim" Steedley (Becky), Terry Steedley (Callie), Ronald Rhoden (Mona), Freida Steedley Keppers (Dave), David Rhoden (Susan), and Mark Steedley.  She also leaves behind nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

In addition to Wheeler, Inez is preceded in death by her her four siblings: Helen McTeer Hills, Virginia McTeer Beach, Esther McTeer Crews, and Alvin Donald McTeer.  She was also predeceased by her first husband Harold D. Rhoden.

A private graveside service will be held for immediate family only.  Memorials may be directed to Live Oak Cemetery.
