Obituary

COTTAGEVILLE:     Mr. Joseph Donald "Mac" McLees, husband of the late Glennie J. Garrett McLees, passed away Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at his home in Cottageville under hospice care surrounded by his loving family.  He was 84.

Mac was born in Birmingham, Alabama October 16, 1936 a son of the late Thomas Harry and Minnie Hortense Nix McLees.  He joined the United States Navy in 1954 and served during the Vietnam War.  He retired in 1974 as a Chief Machinist Mate, E-8.  During his career he was fortunate to be able to visit many countries throughout the world.  After his retirement, he worked for Amstar Corporation, and later joined Alumax when they opened in Goose Creek, retiring again in 2000.  Mac was never satisfied when he wasn't working.  He started"Mac's Lawn Care", and was known for maintaining the yards of many residents in Cottageville and the surrounding areas, with the help of his devoted grandchildren.  After persuasion from his children, he totally retired at the age of 78.

Mac loved to eat…especially seafood.  He never missed a NASCAR race, his favorite driver was Bill Elliott, and he was a devoted fan of FORD vehicles.  If he wasn't watching races, he was watching Westerns…especially Gunsmoke.

He is survived by his children:  Donna and Wallace Addison of Cottageville (Wallace being his primary caregiver for three years), Joseph and Joy McLees of Walterboro, and Gerri McLees of Cottageville.  He leaves behind his grandchildren:  Michael and Kim Barrineau of Moncks Corner, Daniel and Michelle Howard of Ladson, Nikki and Warren Schluter of Cottageville, Kristen and David Roper of Cottageville, Lindsey and Brian Linder of Mechanicsburg, PA, Amanda Barrineau of Cottageville, Lauren and Hargrove Smith of Columbia, and Jason and Jennifer Addison of Freemont, CA.  There are sixteen great-grandchildren, with one on the way, and two great-great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert "Bobby" McLees, William "Billy" McLees, and Daniel McLees, by his sister Tommie Mae McLees Billings (Hollis), by a son-in-law Robert "Bobby" Howard, and by a daughter-in-law Phyllis "Penny" Smith McLees.

A memorial service for both Mr. McLees, and his late wife, who passed away in April of this year, will be held in April of 2021.  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
