LODGE:     Mr. Larry M. Carter, beloved husband of Barbara Jackson Carter, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025 at his home in Lodge, surrounded by his devoted family, at the age of 79.

Larry was born in Lodge September 7, 1946 a son of the late Alex Peeples Carter Sr. and the late Lunita Ulmer Carter.  He attended the original elementary school in Lodge before it was destroyed by fire, and later graduated from Bells High School.  Larry was taught the values of hard work, honesty and family from an early age.  As a boy he learned how to work the land and care for animals, and the love of that lifestyle remained with him throughout his life.  His favorite times were spent on the tractor planting and harvesting, or caring for livestock…especially his hogs!  It was often said that dirt ran through his veins.

Larry was a gifted carpenter, and his skills as a woodworker were known throughout the area.  Until illness prevented it, he was still regularly approached by people wanting him to create the cabinets for their homes.  He could make anything out of wood, and the pieces of furniture he created will be cherished by his family as they are passed down to future generations.  He began his career at Ponds Construction, and eventually became a valued supervisor with Mitchell Construction.  He was an integral part of that company until his retirement.

Larry was a public servant in every possible way.  He loved Colleton County, but especially Lodge…the town where he spent his entire life.  He was a member of the Fire Department and Rescue Squad, was a town council member for forty years, and served as mayor for ten years.  Larry was also a member of Hope Lodge #122, where he was a 3rd Degree Mason and was the Past Master.  He also served his state and nation as a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard.

Larry loved his Lord, and he was a true Christian man.  He was a lifelong member of the Lodge United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer for 25 years.  He was a devoted husband to his wife Barbara since they were married on May 1, 1971.  He was a loving and attentive father to his two sons, and was always involved in their school activities.  He taught them the same values he learned throughout his life, and created in them a love of hunting and the natural world.  He will truly be missed by his family and all that knew him.

In addition to his wife of 54 years, Larry is survived by his sons Larry Madison Carter Jr. (Michelle) and Brian Wayne Carter (Danielle).  There are three grandchildren he adored:  Skylar McKenzie Carter, Kaylee Grace Carter, and Hunter Brian Carter.  He leaves behind his brother Alex P. Carter Jr., his sister Lindy Carter Starliper, and his sister-in-law Deborah Ross Carter.  There is a host of extended family that loved him dearly.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Richard Phillip Carter Sr.

The family will receive friends during a time of visitation Tuesday evening, December 9, 2025 from 5:00 until 7:00 at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning, December 10, 2025 at 11:00 at Lodge United Methodist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Larry's memory to the Lodge United Methodist Church, P.O.Box 104, Lodge, SC  29082.  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
