Lewis Coleman Harris, husband of Arlene Sherman Harris, Master Jeweler, entered into eternal rest Saturday November 16, 2024 at home with his loving family by his side. He was 85.

Lewis was born on October 28, 1939 in High Point, North Carolina, son of the late Abram Moses Harris and Ruth Horowitz Harris. He was a 1957 graduate of Walterboro High School, and a 1961 graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a BS in Political Science, and was a member of Pi Lambda Phi. An Air Force Veteran, he served from 1963 to 1969, and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1970 he moved to Atlanta, Georgia and went to work for Earl D. French Inc. where he trained to learn bench work of the jewelry repair trade. In June he met the love of his life Arlene at an apartment clubhouse party on the Buford Highway. Lewis and Arlene married on February 14, 1971 and spent 53 wonderful years together. In June 1971, Lewis and Arlene packed up a U-haul and moved back to Lewis's hometown, Walterboro, South Carolina where Lewis joined his parents, Abe and Ruth in the family business Hayes Jewelers. In 1972 Lewis became a Registered Jeweler with the American Gem Society and continued his certification for the next 52 years. Lewis operated the family business which had been open for 83 years until July 2024 when he retired due to his health.

Lewis was a member of Synagogue Emanu-El and Temple Mt Sinai where he served as Treasurer 53 years, was 32degree Mason, Past Master, Shriner, Elk, Rotarian – Paul Harris Fellow, and Jaycee.

In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by daughters Beth Harris Veyber (Mikhail) of Charleston, South Carolina, Amy Harris Gelfand (Aaron) of Round Rock, Texas, grandchildren Alexis Mae Veyber and Gregory Raymond Veyber both of Charleston, South Carolina and his sister Cecile "Cissy" Rosenberg (Raymond) Stone Mountain, GA.

The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Thomas and Amedisys Hospice for the love, care, compassion and support provided to Lewis in his final days.

The L'vayah will be conducted from the graveside at Live Oak Cemetery Tuesday morning, November 19, 2024 at 11:00.  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
