WALTERBORO: Mrs. Annie Marie Muckenfuss Smith, wife of the late Hugo B. Smith Jr., passed away at her home Sunday morning surrounded by her loving family. She was 85.

Mrs. Smith was born in Colleton County April 4, 1930 a daughter of the late Clifton M. and India Rhode Muckenfuss. She was the valedictorian of her graduating class of the Cottageville High School in 1947. She was a salesperson and bookkeeper for Spell Furniture, and was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a wonderful homemaker for her family. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Cottageville Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children: Hugo B. Smith III (Debi) of Summerville, Teresa S. Stringfield (Donnie) of Greenpond, and Sandra S. Trippe (Bubba) of Walterboro. There is one brother, Floyd Muckenfuss of Charleston, and one sister, Margaret Hoff of Cottageville. There are four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith also leaves behind a devoted friend and companion, Joseph B. "Joe Ben" Ackerman of Cottageville. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lamar and Morris Muckenfuss.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 in the chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, with burial following in the Jordan Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Jordan Cemetery or to Hospice Care of South Carolina.
