EDISTO BEACH: Mrs. Mary Nancie Johnson Green, wife of Harold Dean Green, passed away Sunday evening at her home surrounded by her family under the care of hospice. She was 78.


Mrs. Green was born in Morganton, NC November 23, 1936 a daughter of the late Hugh Clarence Johnson and Azile Powell Johnson. She attended Newberry College and the Medical University of South Carolina, where she was trained as a Lab Technician. She spent most of her adult life in Bamberg with her husband where she worked for both Dr. Herb Moskow and Dr. John Ross. Mrs. Green was active in the community through the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association, and she was instrumental in the formation of the Candy Striper program at the Bamberg County Hospital.

Mrs. Green and her husband relocated to Edisto Beach in 1990…a community they had both grown to love over the years through countless visits and vacations. She became extremely involved in that community as well. She was an active member of the Edisto Island United Methodist Church, where she attended the Godwin/Pate Circle and assisted with the creation of the clothes closet. She was involved with the American Red Cross and the "Get to know Edisto" program that assisted new residents of the area. In 2011 she received the Martha B. Whitstone Service Award from the Edisto Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to her husband of fifty-nine years, she is survived by her children: Lee Ann Green McElveen (Carl DuBose "Bosie") of Columbia, Vera Margaret Green (Lorraine Bonura) of Edisto Island, and Harold Dean "Hank" Green Jr., Ph.D. of Los Angeles. There are two grandchildren: Mary Talbert McElveen and Margaret DuBose "Maggie" McElveen. She has one brother, James Clarence Johnson Jr. (Lillian) of Edisto Beach, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Johnson Fender. The family would like to thank Hospice of Charleston, Glennie Bligen, Beka Vincent, Bette Smalls and the entire Edisto Island Community for providing compassionate care to them during the past few months.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:00 in the Edisto Island United Methodist Church, 8193 Palmetto Road, Edisto Island, SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral. A graveside service will be held that afternoon at 3:30 at Bamberg Memorial Gardens, 14836 Heritage Highway, Bamberg, SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service at the home of Spann and Jamie Brabham, 3122 Railroad Avenue, Bamberg, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the church at P.O.B. 485, Edisto Island, SC 29438.
