Obituary

Mary Anne Cyr Hess passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at the age of 87. Born June 17, 1938, in Washington, D.C. Eldest of four children born to the late Arthur Paul Cyr, Sr. b. Fort Kent, ME and Audrey Frieda (nee Golden) Cyr b. Minneapolis, MN. She inherited her lovely strawberry blonde hair from her Grandfather Golden.

Mary Anne was a proud graduate of St. Cecilia High School, Englewood, NJ in 1955.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, David Harold Hess Jr., whom she met, in an elevator, when both were working at Rockefeller Center, New York City. They were married April 16, 1961, in Tenafly, NJ; she danced with her 86-year-old grandfather Cyr at the wedding reception.

Cherished mother of sons Peter Hamilton Hess (Ponte Vedra, FL) b. 1962, and David Harold Hess III (Walterboro, SC), b.1964, and his wife Connie (nee Poteete); Connie's daughter Amanda Bradburn (Greenville, SC) and her grandchildren Millie (1), Layla (9), and Jaxson (10), and her son Connor Armstrong (Little Switzerland, NC).

Starting in Houston, TX in 1971, Mary Anne and Dave began their life as volunteer foster parents, fostering over 100 infants across the country, during the next 40 years. In Pennsylvania, California and finally, in retirement, f inishing up in Ponte Vedra, FL. Because of her selfless, nurturing and motherly ways, countless lives have been enriched with the joys of family and parenthood. Mary Anne loved her babies, when they had no one, she was there for them, and she did all she could to ensure they were received by the most loving of families. She has justly received her angels' wings and is with Christ, her Lord and Savior.

She was a proud grandmother of David Harold Hess, IV) b. 1986; Perry Hamilton Hess b. 1992, (and his fiancée, Kaitlyn Goodwin) (Jacksonville, FL); Matthew Blake Hess b. 1993, (wife, Katie) (Denver, CO); Reagan Andrew Hess b. 2000, (Denver, CO).

Mary Anne is also survived younger siblings: Paul Arthur Cyr, Jr. (wife Carla) (Gig Harbor, WA); and by her sister Susan Elizabeth Cyr (husband Mark Kevin Johnston) (Greenville, SC); and Richard Robert Cyr (wife Kathy) (Madisonville, LA)

A Memorial Mass to be celebrated on 16 May 2026 at 10:30 St. Anthony's Catholic Church. 925 S. Jefferies Blvd, Walterboro, SC 29488 followed by a Committal Ceremony at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens on Hendersonville Hwy across from Dogwood Hills GC
