Mary Elizabeth Youmans Tumbleston, wife of the late Charles Marshall Tumbleston, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2020. She was 83.
Mrs. Tumbleston was born in Cottageville November 15, 1937 a daughter of the late George and Irma Free Youmans. She grew up in Cottageville, graduated from Cottageville School, and had a wonderful childhood with good friends. She loved animals, and riding horses. After marrying Charles, they lived in Florence, Charleston and Greenville. In 1972 they moved to Louisville, KY before moving to Lebanon, TN in 1976. After her husband's death in 1983 she remained in Tennessee surrounded by her children and grandchildren until her passing.
Mrs. Tumbleston loved history and worked for many years giving tours at the Hermitage (Andrew Jackson) House, the Tennessee State Capital and The Tennessee State Museum. She had a heart for animals, occasionally taking in injured or stray dogs and cats. Mary missed her home, and always wanted to return to South Carolina. Two of her favorite things were Lowcountry Cooking and Edisto Beach.
She is survived by her children, Tammy Tumbleston Garrett (Paul "Pete") and Charles Marshall Tumbleston II (Donna). She has three grandchildren: Charles Edwin Tumbleston (Chloe), Madeline Garrett Lawson (Mitchell), and Paul Marshall Garrett (Jamie). Mrs. Tumbleston leaves behind one great grandson Rhett Garrett Lawson, and a sister Margaret Ann Rowe. There are a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
