RUFFIN :     Mr. Melvin H. Kane, husband of the late Betty Probst Kane, passed away Saturday evening, February 27, 2021 at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.  He was 88.

Mr. Kane was born August 14, 1932 in Mundelein, Illinois a son of the late Earl and Louella Mitchell Kane, and was a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. Kane was a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.  He served as a Camp Ranger before becoming the Camp Director of both Camp Wallwood in Florida, and Camp Ho Non Wah in Charleston.  His wife Betty was by his side, and was his primary assistant in influencing the lives of countless young men.

Mr. Kane was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  He was a kind man, and was known as a master handyman.  He loved his Lord, and was an active member of the Ruffin Baptist Church before his health declined.  He lived his life following the ways of Christ and the Scout Law, and will truly be missed.

He is survived by his son Donald Gordon Kane (Robin) of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, and by his grandchildren Preston (Alex) and Molly Kane, and by his great-grandchildren Winnie and Solly Kane.  He leaves behind his devoted daughter-in-law Deborah Kane O'Quinn (Mack) of Walterboro, his sisters-in-law Eunice George and Sunnie George, as well as a host of nieces and nephews that dearly loved "Uncle Mel".  In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son Harold E. Kane, by his five siblings, and by his granddaughter Mary Beth Kane.

Mr. Kane will be interred with military honors at the Chatanooga National Cemetery in Chatannoga, TN.  A public memorial service will be held at a later date.  The family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff and management of the Pruitt Healthcare Center for the excellent care given to both Mr. Kane and Mrs. Kane during their final years.   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ruffin Baptist Church. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home of Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
