WALTERBORO: Dr. L. Michael Padgett, husband of Susann H. Padgett, passed away unexpectedly at his home early Tuesday morning, December 3, 2024 at the age of 71.
Michael was born in Walterboro on October 30, 1953 a son of the late Senis McTeer "Cy" Padgett and Lorene Givens Padgett. Throughout his life he maintained a deep love for and close connection with his parents, and even as an adult, would eat with each of them daily. After graduating from high school Michael followed in his father's footsteps and attended Clemson University. A legacy was established that continued when his children Ashleigh and David also attended and graduated from the school. He was as proud a supporter of Clemson as a man could be, and his favorite times were spent on the campus and at the stadium, cheering for the Tigers with his family and friends. His blood truly ran orange!
After graduating from Clemson, Michael attained his Doctorate of Optometry, and returned to Walterboro where he practiced for over forty years. He was known for his attentive and thorough care, which often spanned generations. He was a member of the South Carolina Optometric Association, and had formerly served as President. Michael was active in his community and was a member of the Civitans, Bethel United Methodist Church, and of course IPTAY.
The most important thing in the world to Michael was his family. Nothing made him prouder than the successes of his children and grandchildren. Michael would often be found cheering on his grandchildren at their various sporting events, and he loved taking them on adventures at his farm. Some of the best memories made were also at Edisto Beach with his close family friends the Zipperers. Both families were close throughout the years as their children were raised together, forming bonds that will be carried on into the future.
Michael is survived by his high school sweetheart Susann, by his daughter, Ashleigh Padgett Headley, and her husband Jonathan, and by his son David Padgett, and his wife Ashley. He leaves behind the grandchildren he cherished so much: Mac, Wells, and Beau Headley, and Sanders and Ford Padgett. Michael is survived by his siblings Fred M. Padgett (Nanci) and Nancy Spencer (Jim).
Michael's family invites all of his friends to a celebration of his life Thursday evening, December 5, 2024 from 5:30 until 7:30 at Dogwood Hills Country Club.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning, December 6, 2024 at 11:00 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Walterboro, with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, where he will be interred beside the parents he loved so much. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street is in charge of arrangements.
