WALTERBORO: Mr. Ronald Mitchell "Mickey" Groves Sr., husband of the late Nina Jean Stone Groves, passed away peacefully Friday morning, November 15, 2024 at Magnolias of Walterboro under hospice care, with his family by his bedside. He was 81.
Mickey was born in Walterboro May 12, 1943 a son of the late Willie Ladson Groves and Tal Beverly Groves. He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. During his extensive training and combat service, he amassed 163 jumps. After his honorable discharge, Mickey worked for Asplundh Tree Service for over twenty years. He loved fishing and watching NASCAR in his free time, but his focus was always on being a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Mickey is survived by his children: Ashley Groves Thomas (Mack), Elizabeth "Nicki" Webster (Joe Willie), and Johnny Mitchell Groves. He leaves behind nine grandchildren and two brothers, Roger and Bobby Groves. In addition to his parents and his wife, Mickey was preceded in death by two sons, Cayce Mitchell Groves and Ronald "Ronnie" Mitchell Groves Jr., and by five siblings: Brenda Denny, Cindy Hiott, Helen Wright, Utsey Groves, and Chuckie Groves.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to all of the staff and nurses of Magnolias of Walterboro and Edisto Home Health Hospice for the excellent care they gave to Mickey during his illness and passing. Their genuine love for him will not be forgotten.
Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon, November 19, 2024 at 2:00 at Bedon Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 until 1:30 at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org .
