Obituary

WALTERBORO :     Mr. Raymond Varnadoe, husband of the late Ilka Jung Varnadoe, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, at the Summerville Community Hospice House Friday evening, November 4, 2022.  He was 81.

Raymond was born in Colleton County November 12, 1940 a son of the late James Ernest Varnadoe and Emma Adell Herndon Varnadoe.  He worked for many years at Asten Hill before eventually starting his own business…Varnadoe Tree Service.  Raymond was known as a resilient man of great strength…physically and spiritually.  He cherished his time spent outdoors hunting, fishing and simply enjoying God's creation.  For many years he was a daily fixture at the China Dragon restaurant, always eager to share a meal with friends.  He will truly be missed.

Raymond is survived by his daughters:  Karla Varnadoe, "Beanie" V. Mixson (Tracy), Susanne "Dubby" Varnadoe, and Nicole V. Price.  There are seven grandchildren:  Trey Whittle (Krystal), Leah M. Elkins, Philip Cockle, Cory, Lena and Blu Allred, and Nate (Hillary, and Ethan Mixson.  There are also seven great-grandchildren:  Madison and Mason Whittle, Hayden and Harlen Lee, Wrenly Mixson, Cash Allred and Destani Whaley.  Raymond leaves behind his sister Gloria Cummings, his sister-in-law Linde Gavin, his step-brother Harry Hiers Jr., and his step-sister Sheron Smith. He is also survived by his special friend Tommy Hubbard.

In addition to his wife of sixty years, and his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his brother Jack Varnadoe, by his sister-in-law Billie Varnadoe, by his brother-in-law Don Gavin, by his step-sister Doris Ann McMillan, and by his brother-in-law Wayne Cummings.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Bryan Tompkins, Dr. Ziad Skaff, Roper St. Francis Hospital and the Summerville Community Hospice House for the excellent care they gave to Raymond during his illness and passing.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday morning, November 8, 2022 at 11:00 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens of Walterboro.  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
