Obituary

WALTERBORO:

Roy Lovell Long, 87, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025, at Veterans Victory House in Walterboro, South Carolina.

Born on January 11, 1938, in Seaboard, North Carolina, Roy was the beloved son of the late Robert and Ellie Long. Roy was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Betty Greene Long; his brother, Robert W. Long, Jr.; and his parents. He is survived by his dear cousin Phyllis Woodard and her husband Jim of Rolesville, NC, as well as his longtime friend Robert Baggett of Walterboro, with whom he shared many years of friendship.

After graduating from high school, Roy proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960 as an aircraft maintenance technician. During his service, he traveled extensively around the world and cherished his time in the Air Force, reflecting often on the camaraderie and experiences he gained during those years.

Following his military service, Roy built a career as a machinist with JP Stevens Textile Corporation, working in Greenville, SC; Charlotte, NC; and Walterboro, SC.  Roy was an active member of the Elks lodge 1988.  He especially enjoyed belonging to the "backporch crew" with this organization. A long-time resident of Walterboro, Roy found great joy in cooking for large community and church gatherings and became well known for his delicious Lowcountry cuisine. He also enjoyed woodworking and metalworking, spending many hours crafting with care and precision.
