WALTERBORO: Julian Ryan Buddin, a respected local dentist and community leader, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 11, 2017, at his residence in Walterboro.

Ryan was born December 19, 1936 in Olanta, SC the fourth of four children to the late Julian Ryan Buddin, and Eusell Floyd Buddin. He was married to Dottie Gales Buddin, and has two sons, Jay Buddin (Christy) and Todd Buddin (Tracey). There are two step-children, Pam Chewning Hood (Ken) and Clint Chewning, as well as nine grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Elsie Prosser. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Powell and Jackie Brown.

Ryan graduated from Olanta High School in 1954, and then attended Clemson University, graduating in 1958. He attended dental school at the University of Louisville, graduating in 1962, and while there, he was a member of Delta Sigma Delta. He later served in the US Army as a Captain in the Dental Core.

Ryan practiced dentistry for several years in Beaufort, SC before moving to Walterboro, SC in 1966. He was an active member of the Lowcountry Dental Society, serving as President in 1972. He served on the board of the Dogwood Hills Country Club, and was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where he was a past Sunday School teacher, served on the Finance Committee, and was a receiving usher for many years.

Ryan practiced dentistry until 1986. Following his retirement, he enjoyed real estate and tree farming. He became an avid golfer and fisherman, and he enjoyed attending sporting events, especially baseball involving family members that were playing, and also Clemson football.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon June 14, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Bethel United Methodist Church, with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home of Walterboro, which is in charge of arrangements.
