WALTERBORO:

Sara Elizabeth Gantt Avant, 74, of Walterboro, SC, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025.

Born on August 17, 1950, in Orangeburg, SC, Sara was the daughter of Jessie O'Hara Gantt and Linwood Gantt. She spent her life nurturing the people, animals, and passions she held dear. Since April 10, 1984, she shared her life with her devoted husband, Freddie Lee "Ted" Avant.

Sara found joy in gardening, cooking, and caring for animals—especially the many dogs and cats she lovingly rescued over the years. She had a particular soft spot for feral cats, providing them with care, shelter, and kindness. A fan of classic Western movies and TV shows, Sara also cherished quiet moments at home and was deeply devoted to her family.

She is survived by her husband, Ted Avant; stepdaughter, Lisa Blake Avant; grandsons, K. Garris Luckie and W. Fuller Luckie; and her brother, Lin Gantt. She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather, James Marion Hutto, Jr., her stepmother Myra Gantt, and her stepdaughter, Monica Dene Avant Luckie.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date.

The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to James Casella and Carrie Dechants for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Walterboro.
