Sara Lyle Thomas Koger, 98, of Round O, passed away peacefully at her home on May 27, 2026.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning, June 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Presbyterian Church by the Reverend Henry Meeuwse. Interment will follow at Live Oak Cemetery.

Born on May 4, 1928, in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late Claude Albert Thomas and Eula Fudge Thomas. She was married for 52 years to her beloved husband, William Randolph Koger, who preceded her in death in 2007.

Mrs. Koger graduated from Olanta High School and attended Winthrop College. She met her future husband at Draughon's Business School. She was employed in the accounting department at Colonial Stores Warehouse in Columbia before marrying William Randolph Koger, Sr. on March 27, 1954, at Nazareth United Methodist Church in Olanta, South Carolina.

The couple lived in Walterboro until 1957 before moving to Williston, where they raised their three children. In 1973, Mrs. Koger became a substitute teacher in the Williston-Elko School District. In 1989, she and her husband returned to the Walterboro/Round O area.

She is survived by two sons, William R. (Caroline) Koger, Jr. of Hampton and John A. Koger of Round O; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Koger (Daniel) Westbury of Round O; grandchildren, Sarah (Ben) Padget of Hampton, Kelly (Corey) Miner of Midway, Georgia, Rebecca (Tucker) Swofford of Hampton, and Andrew (Ashley) Koger of Round O; great-grandchildren, Harley Miner, Charles Padget, Thomas Padget, Colton Miner, Oliver Swofford, Ella Koger, and Emma Swofford; a brother, Wallace Thomas of Olanta; a sister, Eleanor McGuinn of Greensboro, North Carolina; a brother-in-law, Dr. Asa Orin Bishop of Knoxville, Tennessee; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Michael T. Koger; two sisters, Genelene Thomas and Dorothy Thomas Bishop; a brother, Alton Thomas; a sister-in law, Mildred Holliday; and a brother-in-law, Ray Holliday.

Some of Sara Lyle's happiest memories were made at Edisto Beach. The family vacationed there when her children were young, and in 1984 they built their beach house, where countless treasured memories were created. Although she never learned to swim, she was always quick to fuss at the children and grandchildren if they ventured too far into the water.

She especially loved sitting on the porch with the fan blowing on her after breakfast. She would be the last at the table making sure every crab had been cracked and competing to see who could eat the most corn — a contest she usually won. At her home in Round O, she enjoyed raking leaves beneath the oak trees and caring for her family through her cooking. Her butter beans were unmatched, and her blueberry pound cake was a favorite family tradition.

Sara Lyle was also a natural athlete. While attending Winthrop, she played on the softball team. She later taught her children to play tennis and encouraged their development in many sports.

Sara Lyle will be most known for being a caregiver. Her life was devoted to doing for others. Whether as a mother, wife and substitute teachers in her earlier years or later when she cared for her sons, mother, mother-in-law and husband, she provided care that could not have been matched by anyone. She had a medical reference book and made sure she understood every diagnosis, medications prescribe and best way to manage every illness. It is so fitting that her two children, John and William, cared for her with the same love and devotion at the end of her life.
