WALTERBORO:     Mrs. Sara Maxcey Smith, wife of the late Charles Edward Smith, passed away on Wednesday June 14th at The Oaks in Orangeburg, SC.  She was 95.

Mrs. Smith was born in Williams, SC March 26, 1928, a daughter of the late Willie Wescott Maxcey and Leila Breland Maxcey.  She had been an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Essie Loper Circle. She previously taught Sunday School in the primary department for twenty years, was past president of Bethel UMW, worked in the kitchen for a number of years helping with the serving of food, and was instrumental in the formation of the ladies exercise group...which she enjoyed participating in until her eighties. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and was known for her chocolate chip cookies, pimento cheese and chicken salad.

She is survived by a son, William "Bill" Smith(Pat) of Cape Coral FL, a daughter Joanne Smith Herndon(Jeffrey) of Walterboro, grandchildren Meaghan, Steven, Brooks, and Lauren and great grandchildren Mira, Banks, Breland, and Louie. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son Richard Smith and her ten brothers and sisters.

She leaves behind her longtime caregivers that she considered family, Martha Smalls and Kay Jacobs.  The family wishes to thank them, and they also express appreciation to Rae Crosby and Jessie James for the excellent care they gave to Mrs. Smith.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, June 17, 2023 at 11:00 at Bethel United Methodist Church, with burial following at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 in the church fellowship hall.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 355 Hampton Street, Walterboro, SC  29488.  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
