Dr. Thomas Cleveland Hulsey passed away on December 1st, 2020 at his home in Bennetts Point, SC.

Born 1951 into the Dodd Family of Round O, South Carolina. Tommy was raised by his mother Margaret, grandfather, and four uncles. He developed a love for the land and being outdoors growing up on Dodd Farm. Tommy was most at home in the woods or on the water around the lowcountry.

He could be frequently found on his family farm hunting and fishing, where he recently executed a plan to bring wild quail back to SC. Many sporting adventures and grand memories were made locally and abroad surrounded by his daughter, Meggie, son, Dodd, and lifelong friends, Legare Johnson and Ted Ford.

His professional calling to serve the health of the public began locally, but reached across the globe. He graduated from the Baptist College of Charleston, went on to obtain a Masters in Public Health from the University of South Carolina, and then a Doctorate from Johns Hopkins University.

He served The Medical University and people of South Carolina and Charleston for 27 years. In 2014 he joined West Virginia University as the Chairman of both the Department of Epidemiology and School of Public Health.

Tommy's professional accolades and accomplishments are too numerous to list but are reflected in the thousands of health professionals educated through his programs and research and in the innumerable lives saved from his diligent work.

Tommy's titles included Doctor, Professor, Dean, Chief, Tenured, Chairman, and Director; but the roles he was most proud of and deserves the most praise were Family, Friend, and Father.

His faith was strong and we will see him again.

Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday morning, December 9, 2020 at 11:00 at the Fox Cemetery in Round O.  The family will receive friends during a time of visitation Tuesday evening, December 8, 2020 from 5:00 until 7:00 at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro.
