WALTERBORO :     Mr. Thomas G. McMurray, husband of Devora "Dee" Rose McMurray, passed away Saturday evening, January 29, 2022 at the Ralph A. Johnson V.A. Medical Center in Charleston under hospice care, from complications of Lewy Body Disease.  As he took his last breath, he joyfully walked home with our Lord.  He was 71.

Thomas was born in Litchfield, Minnesota December 5, 1950 a son of the late Thomas Donald McMurray and Dorothy Ann Jensen.  He was a proud veteran of the United Sates Navy, and served for twenty years in the submarine fleet.  He attained the rank of Chief Quartermaster, and during his career, served on four different "Boomers"… Ballistic Missile Submarines;  The USS Sam Houston SSBN/609 (1969), The USS Thomas Edison SSBN/SSN-610 (1969-1976), The USS John Marshall SSBN/SSN-611 (1979-1983) and The USS Tennessee SSBN-734 (1986-1989).  He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and while serving in the Command Center Atlantic Fleet, worked with the British on FHLT.  He was also a Navy ROTC instructor at Cornell University.

Thomas was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He cherished the time spent with them…and his close friends…cooking and socializing at their home.  He enjoyed taking vacations focused on wine tasting, and also was particularly fond of watching the Little League World Series and John Wayne war movies. He found peace and comfort in sculptures of dolphins in water, and he was a member of the Walterboro Elk's Lodge.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Timothy Terwilliger (Leigh), and by his grandchildren Haley and Mason Terwilliger.  He leaves behind his sisters Kathy Best, Lorrie Martinez, Wendy Jorgenson and Heidee Brower, as well as sisters-in-law Gloria Crissey (Bill) and Deanna Rose, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services, with honors rendered by the United States Navy, will be held Friday, February 4, 2022 at 4:00 in the Chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Thomas's final wish was for a Burial at Sea, which will be handled privately by the United States Navy at a later date. Memorials may be made in his memory to the Lewy Body Dementia Association (www.lbda.org).  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
