COTTAGEVILLE: Mr. Thomas I. "Tom" Sutphin, husband of Linda Treado Sutphin, passed away Monday afternoon, November 18, 2024 at the Veterans Victory House in Walterboro. He was 76.
Tom was born in Roanoke, Virginia March 13, 1948 a son of the late George Ray Sutphin and Thelma Leonard Sutphin . He served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, where he was a combat infantryman, and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism in battle. He overcame the horrors he encountered, and became a caring and compassionate man because of it. Tom loved helping others, was a devoted member of the Cottageville Community Methodist Church, and was active in the church's food bank. He was a lifelong Democrat, and had served as a local delegate for the Democratic Party.
Tom loved the community of Cottageville, and was active in many areas of service to the city. He was a master carpenter and was known throughout the area for his skill as a woodworker. His favorite pastimes were being on the Edisto River and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Marlo Sutphin and Aimee Brown, and by grandchildren Rivers Sutphin and Benjamin and Rose Brown.
Graveside funeral services, with honors rendered by the United States Marine Corps, will be held Thursday afternoon, November 21, 2024 at 1:00 at the Cottageville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the food bank of the Cottageville Community Methodist Church, 10685 Cottageville Highway, Cottageville, SC 29435. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
