WALTERBORO: Mrs. Vernelle Craven Smoak, wife of Wendell Miley Smoak, died Tuesday evening at her residence. She was 80.

Mrs. Smoak was born January 18, 1936 in Walterboro, a daughter of the late Lemuel Craven and Neta Craven Craven. She was a graduate of the Baptist College in Charleston, and taught business classes at Rice Business College, the Colleton Vocational School, and Wade Hampton High School. She was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church, and she enjoyed singing, writing and painting. Mrs. Smoak was a devoted mother and grandmother, and dearly loved spending time with her family and friends.

In addition to her husband of sixty years, she is survived by a daughter, Crystal S. Spooner (Adam) of Cottageville, and by two sisters, Vera Harrison and Dorothy Choynacki, both of Walterboro. She has two grandsons, Joshua Chase Spooner and Noah Jace Spooner. She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11:00 AM in the Bethel Baptist Church, with burial following in the Bedon Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 at the Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home of Walterboro.
