Virginia Olga Culpepper White died peacefully on May 9, 2017 at Pruitt Health Care Center in Walterboro, SC.

Virginia was born on February 15, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Ernest Lee Culpepper Sr. and the late Sara Catherine Platt Culpepper. She was named "Virginia" after the state of Virginia where her father was born and raised. Virginia was born in Lena S.C. and was fortunate in her early life to live in many interesting places, due to her father's business: Culpepper Lumber Company and Saw Mill.

Virginia had a glorious childhood spent with her family. Virginia's dad built several cottages on Edisto Beach. The Culpepper family loved entertaining Virginia's friends on Edisto Beach where everlasting memories were made.


Virginia graduated from Smoaks High School in Smoaks SC. and continued her education at Winthrop College in Rock Hill S.C.

Virginia made a huge contribution during World War II by working at Anderson Airfield in Walterboro S.C. It was at a USO Dance that she met her future husband, Drury Phillip White of Evergreen Alabama. After the war ended they were married on October 2nd, 1945. Virginia and her husband opened a soda shop in Cottageville, S.C. This is where they enjoyed owning their own business. It is amazing the couples to this day that bring up in conversation, having their first date in the soda shoppe.

In 1951 and 1953 Virginia and Drury White welcomed 2 daughters (Vicki and Kathy) into their world. Vicki and Kathy provided joy, love and happiness in their lives. Virginia was a wonderful mother teaching her girls the values of life. The girls had a grand childhood. Virginia entertained her girls with piano lessons, ballroom dancing, and glorious summers spent at the Culpepper Beach Cottage. They attended "Jack and Jill Kindergarten" which enriched their young lives.

Virginia was a dedicated mother during the girls' formative years and later joined the workforce where she became a bookkeeper with Cummings Oil Company. Franklin Cummings, owner, was thrilled to have Virginia assist him with the everyday activities involving the growth of Cummings Oil. Virginia retired after 20 years of dedicated service on her job.

Virginia had three great passions in her life: her grandchildren, South Carolina Football and her pets. Virginia was proud of all her grandchildren's accomplishments. Katie, Christopher and Laura adored their grandmamma. There was NO one more dedicated to Carolina Football than Virginia White. A member of the Gamecock Club for over 40 years. She never missed a game until her health declined. At this point she continued supporting the Gamecocks by television and radio. She loved tailgating and could call all the plays in the football game. Family and friends enjoyed going with her to the games and watching them with her. They were amazed at the fact that she knew every play called and of course all the players' names and stats.


She absolutely loved her cats. Her nephew Eric Culpepper and niece Debbie Culpepper said, "Laughingly" if they died they wanted to come back as one of Aunt Virginia's cats in their next life. The cats lived a life of luxury!


No one ever visited Virginia's kitchen and left without a slice of "Aunt Virginia's Lemon Pound Cake" and a Coca Cola. She was the Matriarch (only surviving member) of the Culpepper Family. Virginia's life of 94 years was well lived and her sharp wit and sound mind, were evident until her last breathe. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

Besides her parents she was pre-deceased by her husband: Drury Phillip White, her infant sister Catherine Lee Culpepper, her two brothers, Clifton Daniel (C.D.) Culpepper, Ernest Lee Culpepper Jr., and her granddaughter Katherine (Katie) Dale Ulmer, sister-in-law Margaret Culpepper (C.D.'s wife). She is survived by her two daughters: Vicki Lee White Smith (William Ledbetter (Leddy), Sara Catherine White Ulmer (Dale), and two grandchildren Christopher Ledbetter Smith (Jessica), and Laura Elizabeth Ulmer, two step granddaughters Teresa Smith Sauls (Marion) and Michelle Smith Lane. There are eleven nieces and nephews: Catherine Deborah (Debbie) Culpepper Maccario, Donna Leigh Culpepper Johnson, Linda Diane Culpepper (deceased), Margaret Dawn Culpepper Stewart, Clifton Daniel Culpepper Jr., Martha Denise Culpepper Kempson, Susan Gail Culpepper Hyatt, Elana Lisa Culpepper, Edward Lucious Culpepper, Eric Lloyd Culpepper, Elton Lawton Culpepper, her loyal and devoted sister-in-law Lucille Culpepper (Ernest Lee's wife) and Renee' Sammons who was like a daughter.

Virginia was a life-long member of First Baptist Church in Walterboro S.C. where she taught Sunday school for over 15 years.

Reverend Gerald Mabry will conduct the graveside funeral service to be held Thursday May 11, 2017 at 4:00pm, at the Culpepper Family Plot in Live Oak Cemetery Walterboro, S.C. Paul bearers are: Clifton Daniel Culpepper Jr., Edward Lucious Culpepper, Tommy Fennell, Elton Lawton Culpepper, Marion Leon Sauls, and Dale Ulmer. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to FoCCAS c/o Colleton County Animal Shelter. All friends and family welcome.
