WALTERBORO :     Mr. Josh Wendell Smoak, husband of Jackie Murdaugh Smoak, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, September 21, 2021.  He was 72.

Mr. Wendell was born in Walterboro January 12, 1949 a son of the late Horace and Pearl O'Quinn Smoak.  For over forty years he served his community as the owner and operator of Smoak's Heating and Air.  Mr. Wendell loved the Lord with all his heart, and was a long-time member of Adnah United Methodist Church, where he was a Lay Speaker.

Mr. Wendell had several different passions in life.  For many years he was known as "Coach Smoak", and after his grandson Fripp started playing, he never missed a game.  He was an avid outdoorsman, and especially enjoyed coon hunting with his friends and family.  Gardening was one of his favorite pastimes.  He cherished his quiet times there, and was known for his delicious peas and tomatoes.

Mr. Wendell also loved music, singing and dancing.  He attended many local "pickins" as often as he could just to show-off his dance moves, and never met a stranger. He and his wife Jackie always made time for each other, and insisted on having a "date night" every week.  He was an excellent cook, with a passion for  barbecue and hash, which led him to establish his last business, "The Spotted Pig".

Mr. Wendell's biggest accomplishment in life was being married to his wife Jackie for 51 years.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons Josh Wendell "Jody" Smoak Jr. (Michelle) of Taylors, and Brandon Jack "B.J." Smoak of Walterboro. He leaves behind "The light of his life", his grandson, Brandon Fripp Smoak, as well as his siblings:  Ralph Alex Smoak (Sandy), John Alton Smoak (Susan), Kenneth Ellison Smoak (Claire), Mary Jane Porter, Ruby Pearl Minter (Mike) and Janet Hilda Smoak.  He leaves behind his "Favorite mother-in-law", Matred Murdaugh Roberts, his brother-in-law O.D. Murdaugh Jr. (Kathy), and his sister-in-law Betty Causey.  There is a host of extended family, cousins, nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother William Horace Smoak, and by his sister Miriam Lavon Rogers.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning, September 24, 2021 at 11:00 at Adnah United Methodist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Adnah United Methodist Church Cemetery, c/o Sharon Sineath, 1401 Sineath Road, Islandton, SC  29929.  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro, is in charge of arrangements.
